CAROL SULLIVAN- HANLEY ('78)

Board of Directors

Carol is a 1978 graduate of Wheelock College. She has taught in early childhood programs at Tufts University, Children’s Village, Longfellow Laboratory Preschool and the Chestnut Hill School. Along the way, she earned a M.Ed. degree in Young Children with Special Needs at Lesley University. After seventeen years of classroom teaching, she began to teach in Higher Education (where the goals and outcomes are the same, but the students are taller). She worked as a student teacher supervisor and adjunct faculty member at Boston College, Lesley University, Wheelock College and U-Mass Boston for the next thirteen years. It was a trip to Reggio Emilia, Italy with a group of Wheelock alums that “sealed the deal” for a return to an early childhood teaching environment that supported Reggio Emilia’s educational philosophy and practice. For ten years, she was a head teacher at the Beacon Hill Nursery School which is devoted to emergent and organic curriculum, studios for creation and engaging provocations. In the last three years, she has become the music and movement teacher sharing her love for singing and gross motor movement.

When not teaching, she resides in the seaside town of Scituate, MA. There, she is a Library Trustee, a member of the Scituate Democratic Town Committee, a member of the Sister City/West Cork Committee, an active member of First Parish UU Church and a member of four book groups. Her affinity for Wheelock and the Alumni Association dates back to several positions on the Board, the role of President and many years of reunion coordinator and class scribe. She clearly feels that she gets back so much more than she offers by maintaining this alliance.
